To the Mods: Houou has a healing ability that gets taken advantage of in his canon just before he dies; his left arm will need medical attention, but it will be something he can sort out himself if he has assistance. The bandages and steel claws he wears with his costume will have fused to his arm and he’ll be suffering the aftereffects of being poisoned/mind controlled. Katanagatari is one hell of a trip.

Personality:
Houou is charming and enigmatic, with a reputation as a ninja that far proceeds him in his native Japan. As the head of the Maniwa Clan, he’s respected and feared for what he is - a powerful, ruthless genius - and is often the one people turn to when they seek answers or protection.
However, underneath this professional and indestructible persona,Houou is just as uncertain as his peers. Hailed as naturally talented in his youth, he took on the mantle of leadership, but his victories as a leader in the past, quickly fall away in the events of the present; there’s the distinct feeling throughout that Houou is simply running damage control. Forced to juggle not only the survival of his clan, but plan for their future, it’s little wonder that one of his hobbies is listed as ‘worrying’.
He is, however, humble in demeanor, letting his actions speak for themselves - Houou is willing to sacrifice anything for the greater good, including himself and those around him - showing that no price is too steep, especially when the stakes are just as high.
This being said, there is an undercurrent of ironic humour to many of his actions and there’s a distinct gentleness and respect about his manner to even those that don’t feel they deserve it.
Ultimately though, buried under all the prestige, feathers and weight of years, is still a bright eyed, sharp tongued boy, who enjoys dango and can’t quite shake an air of silliness when he’s left to his own devices.
Abilities/Skills:
Inochi Musubi
This technique allows him to stay alive from Sengoku period to the present. Houou steals life from various people and uses their vitality to lengthen his lifespan - absorbing it from the pieces he takes from each person.
Danzaien
This technique allows Houou to slice clean through anything with a swing of his arm. This ability was originally called Namagoroshi by the Aioi Corps.
HairÅken
This technique lets the wielder instantly slip into the shadows behind his target, letting him confuse or attack them with ease. However, it is stated to be ineffective against foes with fast reaction speed or abilities that can defend themselves from behind.
Fukuwajutsu
An ability that is demonstrated by other members of his clan, the Maniwa can communicate silently with each other via/through inanimate objects or animals). Given their occupation, this is an ability known clan wide, with a potential to be taught to others, much as with Houou’s other techniques (excluding Inochi Musubi).
Languages: Japanese and English
Houou hails from a fictitious past of Japan, so his mother tongue is Japanese, but he also shows an understanding of English; something he is quick to hold over the strategian when she misuses the word ‘Cheerio’.
Martial Arts
Houou is a ninja of notable prowess and displays a use and knowledge of the martial arts of his clan that are matched by few others.
Blind combat/navigation
It says an awful lot of Houou’s skills that he’s seen at all times during his canon, to go about his business with his eyes closed. It’s safe to assume that he’s reached a level where he can rely solely on his other senses, potentially to the level of sensing the energy of his surroundings. Either way, lack of sight is in no way a handicap to him.
Kiroku Tadori
After losing his left arm, Houou replaces it with one from another of the clan heads - Kawauso Maniwa - allowing him to use this ability, a kind of psychometry, to read the past of almost any inanimate object. Houou admits to having only a beginners skill with the ability, requiring further practice and possibly instruction, though that is no longer available with his clan's destruction.
